  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 27 October 2025
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-19394

That the Parliament understands that a new monument to honour a Second World War US pilot has been unveiled in Howwood, Renfrewshire; further understands that the monument commemorates 2nd Lt Herman C Carey who died after his aircraft crashed near Howwood, in what is now the Glennifer Braes Country Park, on 28 December 1943; notes that Carey, who was born in Tennessee, took off from Renfrew Airport to fly to Burtonwood Air Base in Cheshire to deliver a P-47D Thunderbolt Aircraft; understands that the installation of the new memorial was possible thanks to the determination of members of the Howwood community council who vowed to renew the memorial after the original was vandalised three years ago; further understands that the monument was unveiled by the Provost of Renfrewshire and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Corinne Hutton, and that wreaths were laid by councillors, the Community Council and local people; welcomes that the Cadets from 1701 Johnstone Squadron of the RAF Air Cadets also attended the ceremony, and commends everyone who is involved in bringing back this monument to Howwood and ensuring that Herman Carey will be remembered as one of the many brave pilots of the Second World War, and someone who represented his country and the allies during one of the most consequential conflicts in modern history.
