Celebrating 25 Years of Starter Packs in Glasgow

  • Submitted by: Humza Yousaf, Glasgow Pollok, Scottish National Party
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 July 2025
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-18254
  • Current status: Fallen

That the Parliament congratulates Glasgow charity, Starter Packs, on 25 years of community service; understands that it supplies packs of household essential items to people who move on from homelessness or care, leave prison or the armed forces, start over following relationship breakdowns, are fleeing domestic violence, or have been affected by fires or floods; notes that in 2024-25 alone, it delivered 1,559 starter packs to households across Glasgow, supporting 2,488 adults and children to settle into their new homes; further notes that it works with a number of housing associations and support services to distribute these packs to those most in need; commends its aim to be self-sustaining via two shops, the Magpie's Nest and the Magpie's Eye, which not only raise money for the organisation, but also exist as community resources; believes that its efforts go a long way towards alleviating poverty, breaking the cycle of homelessness and supporting vulnerable people across Glasgow; thanks the board, staff, and volunteers for their invaluable contribution to the people of Glasgow, and wishes them all the very best for future endeavours.
