  • Current status: Fallen

That the Parliament sends its best wishes to George Boyne, Principal of the University of Aberdeen, who has announced that he will retire from his position in December 2025, two months after his 70th birthday and after more than seven years in office, having begun his term in August 2018; notes that George, a local Aberdeen loon and double graduate of the university, went on to spend the majority of his academic career in Wales, before coming back home to the north east of Scotland to take the reins at his alma mater; recognises that, during his tenure, the University of Aberdeen has achieved its highest ever rankings in the UK university league tables, currently ranking 15th and 12th in The Times and The Guardian lists respectively, as well as second in Scotland on both lists; understands that research awards at the university have recently grown by 30%; notes that, as well as steering the university through numerous financial challenges, including the impact of Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost of living crisis, George has also overseen proactive work on gender-based violence and engagement with the Emily Foundation, the equalisation of terms and conditions for all university staff, and the better recognition of JJR MacLeod, the Aberdeen graduate who became a joint recipient of the Nobel Prize for the discovery of insulin; believes that these successes and others have placed the university on an extraordinarily strong footing going forward, and are a testament to the outstanding service and hard work that George has given during his term in office, and hopes that he has a very happy and enjoyable retirement when it comes.
