Healing Arts Week Scotland

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party
  • Date lodged: Friday, 06 September 2024
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-14343

That the Parliament acknowledges that Healing Arts Week Scotland took place from 19 to 23 August 2024; understands that this was the first healing arts event of its kind and encompassed over 100 events in cities, towns, and rural communities across the country; further understands that it was developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and produced by Scottish Ballet and the Jameel Arts & Health Lab, and involved contributions from other organisations such as the International Teaching Artists Collaborative (ITAC); believes that the programme celebrated and contributed to a growing body of evidence that the arts can improve mental and physical health; notes that WHO research has shown that the use of artistic media in health care and in communities can have a variety of benefits for health outcomes, and calls on the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland to urgently address the reported widespread concerns over funding for arts and culture in Scotland, including by giving local authorities more powers to raise revenue for these purposes.
