Crolla’s Gelateria in Lochmaben

  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 28 June 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09770

That the Parliament congratulates Martin Crolla on taking over Crolla’s Gelateria in Lochmaben, Dumfries and Galloway, thereby representing the fourth generation to run the popular café, which was founded in 1915 and has been at the same address, on Castle Street, ever since; understands that Martin’s great-grandfather, Jeremiah, founded the gelateria, after initially visiting Langholm from the Lazio region of Italy; further understands that Martin's grandfather, Anthony, worked full-time in the shop into his 80s, and still keeps his eye on the business, and that over the years the whole family has been involved, including grandmother, Pirina, whose family came from Bari, which is renowned for its Scottish connections; understands that Martin’s product, which is freshly made daily, is now in 18 flavours, after only being served in vanilla for 104 years, and that, after the shop’s refurbishment in 2022, he has started to innovate further in events and by supplying gelato to Mabie Farm Park’s tea room; congratulates the whole family on their success, and wishes them well for the next century of Crolla’s gelato.
