Thomas Eccles Named Overall Winner of UHI Business Competition.

  • Submitted by: Edward Mountain, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 08 June 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09315

That the Parliament congratulates founder of FlyHighland Ltd, Thomas Eccles, from Nethybridge, on being awarded £1,000 and a combined legal and accountancy package for winning the University of the Highlands and Island’s business competition in May 2023; notes that Thomas Eccles pitched plans to the competition’s judges for a new aircraft, using hydrogen propulsion, from the airport in Wick; understands that the inspiration for the new aircraft came as a result of high prices for last-minute flights that operate between the mainland of Scotland and the Northern Isles, namely Shetland; further understands that Thomas Eccles plans to begin work with an aerospace concept leader and is in the process of fundraising to buy an aircraft and obtain the necessary licenses to operate it; recognises that there were nine other category winners in the competition, who won awards of £1,000 and £500, and wishes Thomas Eccles the greatest success in the future of his business.
