John Fox and Alistair Pratt Win Gold

  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 11 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08891

That the Parliament congratulates John Fox and his guide, Alistair Pratt, on winning a gold medal at the 2023 International Blind Bowls Association World Championships, which was recently held in Australia; understands that John, who is a member of Spateston Bowling Club in Johnstone, previously won a title at the Scottish Association of Blind Bowlers (SABB) Scottish Singles Championship in 2018, and reached the quarter-finals at national level in the pairs category in Ayr, which, it believes, made him the first visually impaired player to qualify for mainstream national finals; notes that John was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a rare genetic condition that has left him with very low peripheral vision, at the age of 25; celebrates that John's achievement of becoming a world champion will be an inspiration to others to participate in bowls and, it believes, sends a message about the importance of sport being inclusive and open to everyone, and believes that John has made his friends, family, fellow Spateston Bowling Club members and his country exceptionally proud of his achievements.
