RNLI Aith Lifeboat Crew Receive Special Recognition Award

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 09 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07422

That the Parliament congratulates members of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Aith lifeboat crew on the receipt of special recognition awards from the RNLI for their efforts during a rescue operation in October 2021 that lasted over 20 hours at sea; understands that the Severn class lifeboat, Charles Lidbury, was called out from Aith in October 2021 to assist a 26-metre whitefish trawler, which had lost power 60 miles west of Shetland and was drifting in worsening weather conditions; further understands that the rescue operation, which was assisted by other fishing vessels and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, saw the six fishermen onboard towed to safety in Scalloway harbour through gale force winds and heavy sea swells; praises the determination and courage of the Aith crew during the 20-hour-long operation; notes that Aith is the most northerly RNLI lifeboat station of the 238 in operation in the UK and Ireland and that crews are trained to operate in testing sea conditions; commends the Aith lifeboat crew for their dedication to saving lives at sea, and wishes all at Aith lifeboat station well.
