To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide funding to cover the repair of vandalised defibrillators, to ensure this equipment can be returned to service as soon as possible.

The Scottish Government does not routinely provide funding for Public Access Defibrillators (PAD). The purchase of PADs is usually through fundraising in the community, from charitable sources or business resources. Charities and organisations including the British Heart Foundation provide access to subsidised defibrillators.

In March this year, the Save a Life for Scotland (SALFS) partnership published an updated Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest strategy and a key part of this programme of work is to ensure mapping, maintenance and accessibility of defibrillators.

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) is committed to supporting and improving the use of defibrillators across Scotland. SAS support and advice on Public Access Defibrillators (PAD) is available to any council, community, organisation or business from their community resilience teams. We would encourage anyone wishing to install a PAD to work with a community group, if possible a specific community PAD group, who will offer support should a PAD be vandalised.

To ask the Scottish Executive what plans it has to support the development of smartcard technology across the public sector.

The Scottish Government believes that smartcard technology has a useful role to play in improving the delivery of public services. It is continuing to support the Customer First programme’s smartcard technology element in the shape of the multi-application National Entitlement Card, which is used in concessionary travel, as the Young Scot Card and for Council services such as libraries and school meals.

I would also refer the member to the answer to question S4W-02093 on 22 August 2011, which affirms that the Scottish Government will continue to work to support the creation of a multi-modal smartcard ticket for use across the public transport system.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it supports a single, unified smartcard system for use across the public transport system.

The Scottish Government has provided Smart enabled Electronic Ticket Machines to the entire Scottish bus fleet, as part of its administration of the National Concessionary Travel Scheme, and has worked with First ScotRail on a trial of similar systems for the rail industry. A report setting out the findings of a comprehensive review to help advance Scottish Government policy towards Smart and Integrated ticketing in Scotland was published in March 2011.

We will continue to work with transport operators, local authorities and Regional Transport Partnerships to support the creation of a multi-modal smartcard ticket for use across the public transport system.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether Scottish Natural Heritage has instructed that all hedgehogs removed from Uist must be electronically tagged prior to their release on the mainland and, if so, what the Executive's position is on this matter.

I refer the member to the answer given to question S2W-2092 today, I understand that Scottish NaturalHeritage (SNH) is currently in discussion with scientific representatives ofUist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) and other welfare interest groups to discuss thedesign and implementation of a trial translocation in spring 2004. This wouldinclude methods of marking and monitoring which are required for robuststatistical analysis of the data. It is likely that this would use electronictags, as these are a suitable and reliable method of tracking a mobile species.All guidance given by Scottish Natural Heritage on the marking of relocatedanimals pertains to those included in the trial as SNH does not condone therelocation of animals without suitable monitoring in place to assess the fateof released animals.
