To ask the Scottish Government what consideration it has given to introducing grants for riparian schemes on salmon rivers.
Answer
The Forestry Grant Scheme already supports planting native broadleaved riparian woodland in a range of situations and can be used to provide cooling shade and improve the habitat along salmon rivers.
Since 2016 the Forestry Grant Scheme has supported the planting of 514 native broadleaved riparian woodlands.
Furthermore, all tree planting and restocking proposals must comply with the UK Forestry Standard, which promotes an integrated catchment management approach and places particular emphasis on riparian woodland and its role in protecting and restoring the freshwater environment.

To ask the Scottish Government for an update on the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS) 2019 application round.
Answer
AECS is funded in part from domestic funds as well as from European Union funding. As a direct result of delays imposed by the postponement of the UK budget earlier this year for the General Election, we are unable to determine the domestic budget available for the 2019 round yet.
This means that while the assessment of all 2019 applications has been completed and those applicants that are potentially eligible for funding consideration are now identified, we are unable to confirm fully at this time whether those eligible applications will actually receive contract offers.
As a direct result of the UK Government actions in postponing the UK budget, all SG directorates have encountered difficulties in confirming their own budgets for spend both in the short and medium term. AECS is not immune to this.
We are writing to each of the 633 eligible applicants to explain the situation and that due to UK government actions we are unable to determine the budget for the scheme as yet. It is our intention to complete the process as soon as we know the available budget for the coming year.
