Chamber and committees

A number of programmes of training with regard to infant mental health have been undertaken since 2012. The following information gives details of those that have trained or are training in infant mental health.

Solihull Approach training

The following table summarises the spread across health boards of the Solihull Approach training completed, the number of new trainers available to deliver foundation level training and the number of cascade trainings completed in the year to March 2015:

Essential Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services

Between 2013 and 2015 there were 470 clinicians trained in Essential Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

The programme commenced in 2012 and is expected to complete in 2016. It should be noted however that this training covers a number of areas including infant mental health.

Neonatal Healthcare

A pilot programme was introduced in March 2015 and has 12 attendees.

Information on psychiatric inpatients and day cases is recorded in Scottish morbidity record 04 (SMR04). Data on SMR04 is routinely published by financial year and 2013-14 is the latest year for which information is available.

SMR04 does not explicitly record whether or not a patient is homeless. Information is provided here on patients who are recorded as ‘no fixed abode’ in the NHS board of residence field.

1. Formal admissions are identified by using the admission status variable. This variable indicates the status of the patient at the time of admission to hospital with respect to the Mental Health Act (Scotland) 2003.

2. Includes all patients treated in Scottish hospitals.

3. Data from the State Hospital (Carstairs) have been excluded.

4. Data from the learning disability specialty have been excluded.

5. Homeless patients have been identified by those coded as having “no fixed abode” as their NHS board of residence. This may be an undercount of the actual number of homeless patients as those who are resident in temporary accommodation or homeless shelter may have their board of residence assigned to the location of this accommodation.

6. Patients are counted only once in each year even if they had more than one formal admission in that year.

The Scottish Stakeholder Group on Child Internet Safety provides expert advice to the government so agenda’s and minutes are stored centrally. Although there have been no specific discussions around the impact of social media on people at risk of eating disorders, it is vital that we educate our children and young people about responsible use of social networking sites and that they do not stay quiet if someone or something makes them feel uncomfortable online. The Scottish Government is working with partners, mainly through schools, to raise awareness of online safety around social networking sites.

Delivery must be made within our overarching waiting time standard that 90% of patients are seen and treated within 18 weeks from initial referral to start of treatment, as it is important that every part of the patient pathway is as swift as possible including any tests required.

It is NHS Education for Scotland (NES) which has operational responsibility for the GP Returner Programme. The programme provides a tailored induction and educational placement of between three to six months for those GPs who have previously worked in NHS general practice but have been out of clinical general practice for more than two years and wish to return to work in NHS general practice in Scotland. This might include GPs who are returning from a career break or those returning from working outside the UK.

The number of GPs recruited into this programme has always been low; on average between five and six per annum. NES report there were four returners in 2013, seven in 2014 and so far in 2015 three have completed the programme, with another three due to start later this year. NES also report they hold a list of nine others who are intending to return to Scotland and who are eligible for the programme.

With £100,000 of additional resources provided by the Scottish Government, NES has worked with NHS boards, The Royal College of General Practitioners, The British Medical Association Scotland and others to relaunch the programme this year. The main objectives are to improve the visibility and accessibility of relevant information for those seeking to return, and improved use of digital media platforms to target practitioners in rest of UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. NES has upgraded its website pages to allow GP’s from all over the world to more easily find information via online searches, is conducting an audit of GP forums and media across the world to inform future marketing approaches, and plans at least one dedicated GP Returners event to take place in Scotland in 2015.
