To ask the Scottish Executive what plans there are to run a public information campaign to encourage personal hygiene prior to the outbreak of any influenza pandemic, given the role of hand-washing in effectively limiting the spread of infection.
Answer
As outlined in the Influenza Pandemic Plan published on 19 October 2005, once a pandemic outbreak was identified a public information campaign would be run advising the public how to protect themselves against spread of infection, including through regular hand washing.
The Scottish Executive’s Pandemic Flu website already contains advice on how to avoid spreading infection. Information is available at www.show.scot.nhs.uk/sehd/pandemicflu.
