To ask the Scottish Executive what the economic and social impact will be on the Highlands and Islands parliamentary region of a £30 million reduction in spending at the Faslane naval base.
Answer
HM Naval Base Clyde(Faslane) has launched a project which aims to reduce annual expenditure by £30million by the end of 2011-12. Theproject is planned to report later in the year and no decisions have yet beentaken, with implementation of any proposals unlikely before April 2008. It istherefore not possible to estimate the potential economic and social impacts atthis time, as the specific nature of the spending reductions are unknown.
The project is fully coherentwith the Naval Base Review, which is currently looking at infrastructure requirementsfor the Royal Navy.
