To ask the Scottish Executive how many women were working part-time in (a) 1979 and (b) 2006 and, of these, how many were earning below the lower earnings limit for national insurance.
Answer
Information on the number ofwomen working part-time in 1979 is not held centrally. The number of women workingpart-time in October to December 2006 was 508,000. This is estimate is taken fromthe Labour Force Survey.
Information on the number ofwomen working part-time earning below the lower earnings limit for national insurancein 1979 is not held centrally. In 2006 it was estimated that 124,000 female part-timeemployees earned below the lower earnings limit for national insurance which was£84 a week. This estimate is taken from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings.
Both of these estimates are basedon sample surveys and as such are subject to a degree of sampling error.

To ask the Scottish Executive what economic inactivity levels were for 18 to 24-year-olds who were not in full-time education in each quarter since 1990.
Answer
Estimates of economic inactivityare taken from the Labour Force Survey. Thefollowing table shows the levels of people aged 18-24 who were economically inactive and not in full-time education forevery quarter from 1994 to the latest available data in 2006.
Data on people aged 18 to 24 who were economically inactive and not in full-time education isnot available prior to 1994.
The estimates are based on asample survey, and as such, are subject to some sampling error. Any changes in theestimates over time may not be statistically significant when sampling error istaken into account.
