To ask the Scottish Executive how many requests for an interpreter have been made in criminal conduct proceedings in Scotland in each of the last five years; how many of these requests were met at the stage of initial asking, and what was the breakdown of such requests by language in each year.
Answer
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is responsible for obtaining the services of interpreters during criminal court proceedings. However, information is not collected centrally as to the number of requests by the Crown for an interpreter, the timing of the request, nor the incidence of particular languages.
