To ask the Scottish Executive how many companies ceased trading in each year since 1999, broken down by (a) local authority area and (b) rateable value.

Data on the number of VAT de-registrationsare released annually by the Small Business Service, an agency of the Departmentfor Trade and Industry. These figures are used to monitor the number of businessclosures.

Not all VAT de-registrationsare due to business closures, in a minority of cases businesses de-register becauseturnover has fallen below the registration threshold. Not all business closuresshould be interpreted as business failures - it is estimated that only around onein four closures involve bankruptcy or insolvency proceedings.

The following table shows figureson the number of VAT de-registrations in Scotland broken down by local authority area for the period 1999to 2005. This data is not available broken down by rateable value.

The statistics held centrallyon recorded crime do not show the number of charges, nor is it possible to breakdown the drug offences by the type of drug involved. The available information isshown in the following tables.

The Accountant in Bankruptcymaintains the Register of Insolvencies in Scotland. Details of bankruptcies are compiled by financial year.The following table gives the number of individualswho have made themselves bankrupt (debtor petition) for the financial years 1999-2000 to 2005-06 showing percentagechange on the previous year.

Details on the number of awardsof bankruptcy by parliamentary constituencyis not available.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many people applied to enter teacher training in each year since 1999 and how many were accepted, broken down by (a) gender, (b) ethnic background and (c) disability.

The following tables below havebeen provided by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Includedare applicants and acceptances to Scottish Higher Education Institutions for undergraduatestudy in the subject of Education. Most of these applicants will enter teacher trainingcourses.
