To ask the Scottish Executive how many breathalyser tests were administered in (a) Dundee and (b) Angus following road accidents in each year since 1997 and what percentage of these were recorded as failed.
Answer
Data about injuryroad accidents are collected by the police and reported to the Scottish Executiveusing the STATS 19 statistical report form. These returns cover only road accidentsin which one or more people were injured and which become known to the police. Thereturns do not cover damage only accidents or accidents of which the police areunaware because they were not reported by the public.
The following tablegives the number of reported injury road accidents which were identified in theSTATS 19 returns occurring within (a) Dundee and (b) Angus Councilareas since 1997 where a breathalyser test was administered with positive/refusedand negative readings and the percentage of the total which failed.
It should be notedthat as well as drivers and riders of motor vehicles, the figures also include asmall number of cases where pedal cyclists or horse riders were breath tested.

To ask the Scottish Executive what measures it will promote to enhance the economic development of Scottish cities.

The GovernmentEconomic Strategy sets out how the Scottish Government will focus on creating amore successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainableeconomic growth. The strategy highlights the importance of Scotland’s cities ascentres of growth and prosperity and sets a framework for the cities to realisetheir full potential.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many police officers will be added to the 1,141 officers working in Tayside Police force as at March 2007 as a result of Tayside Police receiving its proportionate share of “the equivalent of 1,000 additional police officers”, as outlined in Principles and Priorities: The Government's Programme for Scotland.
Answer
Recruitment plansare the responsibility of Chief Constables, but as a result of the Government’sannouncement on 12 November, Tayside Police will be able to recruit anadditional 11 police officers this financial year, over and above therecruitment plans developed under the previous administration.
Furtheradditional officers will be recruited by Tayside police in subsequent years asa result of the Government’s commitment to increase policing capacity.

1. On 1 April 2006, a new nhs eye examination was introduced andentitlement was extended to all in Scotland. An initial eye examination is carried out(primary eye examination) and where necessary this is followed by a further eyeexamination (supplementary eye examination).
