To ask the Scottish Executive how many cases of foot and mouth disease in Scotland have been identified as having been contracted by air-borne transmission and how many by direct contact.
Answer
Initial studies based on observations made in other countries suggest that airborne transmission from infected premises has not been a prominent feature of the current foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. The spread appears mainly to be by direct contact particularly through sheep. The position is being monitored very carefully as the outbreak continues.

To ask the Scottish Executive when the reports of the National Steering Group of the Rural Partnership for Change Initiative will be published.
Answer
I have today published two reports which I have received from the National Steering Group and made these available to the Social Justice and Rural Development Committees, on the Internet and to the Parliament's Reference Centre. One report describes the lessons learned by the Highland Pilot, the other has around 70 recommendations, which fall into five key areas, for action by the Executive, other agencies and departments to address housing pressure in rural Scotland.I am grateful for the commitment and hard work of both the Highland Pilot and National Steering Group and welcome the comprehensiveness of the reports. I have considered their recommendations carefully and have also published my response to the key recommendations by press release today.

Six of the projects currently supported are aimed specifically at children and young people.£10 million in the Scottish Homes budget will improve refuge provision for both women and their children. The Executive provided funding of £10,000 last year to Scottish Women's Aid to support the production leaflets aimed at children and young people and £67,000 to 33 local groups to improve facilities for children and young people in refuges and offices. The core funding which the Executive gives the National Office of Women's Aid includes funding for two posts for National Children's Workers.
