To ask the Scottish Executive how many engineers, electricians and other skilled tradespeople were employed in the NHS in each year since 1997, broken down by NHS board.

The information requested is available from Information Services Division (ISD) Scotland. Data from 1997 to 2006 is available by adding Works and Trades groups together.

Answer
This information is not held centrally. Decisions on the provision of new hospitals, health centres and other facilities are devolved to NHS boards. However, we are in the process of collecting the information from NHS boards and a consolidated list of the information provided by them will be placed in the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (Bib. number 46919).
