Caroline Brown wants to come in. As a supplementary to the previous question, do you want to see a map-based approach, or should it all be in documents?

I am not sure. Mark, do you want to come back in?

Unfortunately, we are three quarters of the way through our time and probably 50 per cent through the questions, so it will be a balancing act. I do not want to cut anyone out, especially not the deputy convener, so I will come to him next.

In the dark days of winter, we now get the promised autumn statement on the A9—I suppose that it is better late than never, considering the time that we have been waiting for this project. Given the Government’s record, how can Scots believe that it can deliver only a miserable seven miles a year of dualling to complete the project by 2035? Given the Government’s failure to deliver a long-standing promise, surely we should expect more.

I thank the minister for being clear on that. I remind the minister and members of my entry in the register of members’ interests, which states that I am a partner in a wild salmon fishery. Salmon eat sand eels, but I will talk about the damage that our seabirds have faced as a result of avian flu, which has been catastrophic. There will undoubtedly be some losses when ScotWind is up and running, so surely we must make sure that our seabirds are in the best possible condition and that there are as many as possible to offset those losses. Does the minister agree that sand eel fisheries should therefore be suspended immediately?

Good morning, and welcome to the 37th meeting in 2023 of the Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee.
The first item on the agenda is to decide whether to take in private item 2, which is consideration of a draft report on appointments to the board of the Scottish Land Commission. Do we agree to take item 2 in private?
Members indicated agreement.

Last year, fewer than 5 per cent of Caithness mums gave birth in Caithness, and more than 200 had to travel to Inverness. Highland councillors are likely to declare a schools emergency because schools such as Charleston academy are collapsing. The Government has ignored the option of spending money on capital infrastructure in the Highlands. That catastrophic lack of funding is the real reason why there is a population drain. Surely it is time for the Government to invest in the Highlands and start by dualling the A9 right now.

I have to push on that point, because the Government has form on this. In 2007, it promised to dual the A9 by 2025. In 2023, it was forced to admit that it would not do that. In 2023, the Minister for Transport promised to deliver a statement to the Parliament, with a backstop of autumn, on what she had found out on the A9 and what was going to happen. She has clearly broken that promise.
Surely the Government would be much better off being honest and coming to the chamber without being forced to, to tell us when we will find out when it will deliver on the promises that it has so far failed to keep.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it plans to propose the scheduling of time for a ministerial statement on the dualling of the A9. (S6O-02870)
