Rural Affairs and Islands Committee

Subordinate Legislation

Meeting date: 1 May 2024

Alasdair Allan

I want to raise a couple of specific technical issues that fishermen in my constituency have raised with me. I suppose that those issues have a wider application. They are about the reliability, as you understand it, of the equipment that would be installed, given the extreme conditions that it would operate in, and avoiding situations in which fishermen have long waits to get items repaired.

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 25 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on its approach alongside Bòrd na Gàidhlig to secure the long-term future of the Gaelic officers scheme. (S6O-03341)

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 25 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

I welcome the cabinet secretary’s intervention in this matter. Clearly, acute financial pressures on Scotland’s budget remain. What can the Scottish Government do to maintain other Gaelic initiatives such as Spòrs Gàidhlig, which seeks to encourage the use of the language through sporting activities? Has the cabinet secretary had discussions with organisations on the long-term sustainability of those initiatives, particularly in the light of the Scottish Languages Bill?

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 24 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

Will the minister give an update on the long-running question of when further work will be progressed by Historic Environment Scotland to ensure that the iconic Kisimul castle in Barra can at least be partially reopened to the public?

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 17 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

Over the years, we have all seen examples of sales of whole islands or other large estates causing real issues for the people who live there. What steps is the Scottish Government taking to give island residents greater protection from having their communities and, often, their livelihoods being bought and sold in that way?

Meeting of the Parliament

Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021

Meeting date: 17 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

Will the member take an intervention?

Meeting of the Parliament

Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021

Meeting date: 17 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

Will Carol Mochan acknowledge the point that the minister made some time ago that, regardless of what members’ views are about implementation, there have been orchestrated campaigns in this country to, I would go so far as to say, waste police time around the implementation of the act by what I think can only be called bad-faith actors.

Meeting of the Parliament

Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021

Meeting date: 17 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

I hear what the member says about the number of complaints that were submitted in the first week. If it came to light that any groups or organisations were orchestrating what looks like an attempt to waste police time, would she condemn those groups?

Meeting of the Parliament

Topical Question Time

Meeting date: 16 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

Given the small but often essential and traditional role that peat plays in heating some of Scotland’s most fuel-poor communities—such as those in my constituency—will the minister say what criteria will be set for an emergency heat system and its fuel sources in relation to the new-build heat standard? I declare an interest of a sort, as I cut peat for my own use.

Meeting of the Parliament

Automated Vehicles Bill

Meeting date: 16 April 2024

Alasdair Allan

It might interest the member to know that one of the reasons why it is so difficult for committees such as the one on which I serve to hear a perspective from the UK Government is that it not only refuses to turn up when it is invited but refuses to answer our letters.
