Education, Children and Young People Committee

Disabled Children and Young People (Transitions to Adulthood) (Scotland) Bill: Stage 1

Meeting date: 22 February 2023

Sue Webber

Welcome back, everyone. The next item on our agenda is an evidence session on the Disabled Children and Young People (Transitions to Adulthood) (Scotland) Bill.

Two panels of witnesses join us today. I welcome our first panel: Tracey Francis, Scott Richardson-Read and Rebecca Williams, who are all policy and development workers from the Scottish Transitions Forum, Association for Real Change Scotland.

We have a lot of ground to cover, so we will move straight to members’ questions. The first questions are from Ruth Maguire.

We will not. That was quite a large number. Does anyone else want to contribute to that question?

Mr Dey, if your supplementary question is short, I will let you in before I come to Ross Greer.

Thank you for that clarification.

We have covered a lot of ground today. I suspend the meeting for five or 10 minutes to allow for a changeover of witnesses. Thank you for giving us such great evidence.

Indeed. Earlier on, we heard evidence about that touch point as and when they need to come in and out of the process.

I have a final question for the witnesses. It would be good to get some detail and specificity on the timeline for the development and publication of the national strategy.

Thank you. I suppose that that reflects the complex landscape that we are working in, and all the different stakeholders that we have. As a committee, we would like someone to come back with an idea of time. That would give us some reassurance on the progress of things that are going on.

I am conscious of the time. I know that you have one more question, Ms Maguire. I ask that the cabinet secretary keep her answers as concise as possible, please.

Stephanie Callaghan has a specific question. I am looking at the clock, but I will give her the opportunity to ask it.

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 22 February 2023

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service—UCAS—has reported that applications to study nursing in Scotland were down 24 per cent this year, with just over 5,000 applicants. There are more than 4,500 vacancies in nursing and, importantly, more than 2,500 nurses have left the profession in the 12 months to September 2022.

The Scottish Government’s announcement of a minister-led nursing task force is welcome, but any recommendations from it are a long way off. It is clear that student nursing numbers in Scotland are in crisis. What immediate action is the cabinet secretary taking to reverse that trend?
