What action will the cabinet secretary take to stop the on-going deterioration of the workforce situation?

Meeting of the Parliament

First Minister’s Question Time

Meeting date: 5 October 2023

Sue Webber

On the subject of rail travel, I have been made aware that ScotRail has made provision in its timetable to allow trains between Edinburgh and Dunblane to stop at Winchburgh. When will Winchburgh get its station?

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 4 October 2023

Sue Webber

The cabinet secretary mentioned building capacity and how it is key to tackling our backlogs, but the national treatment centres are the backbone of that solution. I am concerned that many are behind schedule, and the one that was BMI Carrick Glen hospital will not be open for the foreseeable future. How will we tackle our backlogs when there is such a backlog in producing the capacity?

Meeting of the Parliament

First Minister’s Question Time

Meeting date: 28 September 2023

Sue Webber

To ask the First Minister what assessment the Scottish Government has made of the use of antidepressants in Scotland. (S6F-02411)

Meeting of the Parliament

First Minister’s Question Time

Meeting date: 28 September 2023

Sue Webber

The number of adults and young people who are prescribed antidepressants has significantly increased over the past 10 years, to more than 1 million. Prescriptions are for a wide range of disorders and illnesses. At the same time, national health service spending on mental health, as a percentage, declined between 2011 and 2022. Does the First Minister accept that there is a clear link between the failure to access mental health services and the subsequent increase in prescriptions? Patients are asking for more than pills. What will ministers do to provide that critical access to mental health services?

Education, Children and Young People Committee

Pre-Budget Scrutiny and the Scottish Attainment Challenge

Meeting date: 27 September 2023

Sue Webber

Thank you, cabinet secretary. I am sure that the committee shares the opinion that we are one of the most important committees in the Parliament.

We move to questions from members, starting with Willie Rennie.

Pre-Budget Scrutiny and the Scottish Attainment Challenge

Meeting date: 27 September 2023

On the flexible workforce development fund, I am aware that one of the key Government policies is economic growth with a focus on upskilling and reskilling the workforce across our business community. However, through my conversations with Edinburgh College, in my area, I am aware that it has yet to be notified of its allocation of the flexible workforce development fund for this year. That is becoming more common. I hope that we might get some sense that that fund is not going to be withdrawn or reduced but continued, because it is key to promoting economic growth and supporting our small and medium-sized enterprises across the country. Can you comment on that?

Pre-Budget Scrutiny and the Scottish Attainment Challenge

Meeting date: 27 September 2023

Sue Webber

I never offer this up, because we are never normally in this position. Do members have any other questions on the Scottish attainment challenge? There we go—no member wishes to ask questions.

I thank the cabinet secretary for her time. I suspend the meeting briefly to allow the cabinet secretary and her officials to leave.
