Meeting of the Parliament (Hybrid)

Covid-19

Meeting date: 8 September 2021

Audrey Nicoll

In recent weeks, a number of my constituents have inquired about the option to double up their winter flu vaccine with a Covid booster vaccine. While we await the JCVI’s advice on whether Covid booster vaccines are required, will the First Minister confirm whether consideration is being given to administering the winter flu vaccine and, if applicable, a Covid booster vaccine at the same time?

The minister will be aware that the legendary Manchester United footballer, Aberdeen born and bred Denis Law, recently confirmed his diagnosis of mixed dementia. He believes that repeated heading of footballs may have played a part in that. Policies such as Frank’s law are an excellent way to ensure support for people who are affected by dementia. Does the Scottish Government plan to build on that landmark legislation?

To ask the Scottish Government what steps it is taking to help protect people participating in football activities, particularly children and young people, in light of research suggesting a link between repeated heading of footballs and dementia later in life. (S6O-00092)

Once we have that information and clarification back, do we have a broad timescale for the next stage?

Thank you. We move on to questions. We have an informal running order, but there is quite a lot that we would like to get through this morning.

Ms Clark, would you like to pick up the questions from there?

We are aware that there is on-going legal action, so we should not discuss the specifics of the case, but I am comfortable with members asking questions on wider issues that arise from it.

With regard to the proposed consultation on the health and wellbeing strategy for prisons, we had, as we have mentioned, an interesting visit last week to HMP Edinburgh, where we had discussions about the profile of the population that is cared for there. I found the discussion really interesting and extremely insightful. I am also interested to hear about how we care for people who are in police custody. Are there approaches that are based on human rights and are holistic, and which might use the opportunity of a person being in police custody to implement a wraparound rapid crisis response in order to turn a negative experience into a positive one? Do you have any plans to extend health and wellbeing strategies in prisons to police custody settings?

It is great to hear that, and I acknowledge what is being done. It is important that we recognise that. I have a final question on the role of the third sector in that big piece of work. We should make sure that we support the third sector, as we all know about the amazing and vital contribution that it makes. Will consideration be given to making sufficient funding and support available for the third sector, particularly as we come out of Covid?
