The Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care, Mrs Mary Mulligan, is present. Good morning, minister.
Good morning.
The Subordinate Legislation Committee has nothing to report on the orders and no comments have been received from members. I ask the minister to speak to and move the motions.
Thank you, convener. The instruments are emergency orders that will ban collection of king scallops—because they contain more than the statutory amnesic shellfish poison limit—from an area to the east and an area to the west of Lewis, in the outer Hebrides. The orders have been triggered by the finding of amnesic shellfish poison above the action levels that were set by Europe. The measure is for consumer safety. As members will know, the poison can cause illness in humans.
That the Health and Community Care Committee, in consideration of the Food Protection (Emergency Prohibitions) (Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning) (West Coast) (No 2) (Scotland) Order 2002 (SSI 2002/65), recommends that the order be approved.
That the Health and Community Care Committee in consideration of the Food Protection (Emergency Prohibitions) (Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning) (West Coast) (No 3) (Scotland) Order 2002 (SSI 2002/80) recommends that the order be approved.
Motions agreed to.
That completes the public part of the meeting.
Meeting continued in private until 11:07.
