Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee [Session 6]

Kate Buchanan submission of 26 July 2021

PE1876/C - Accurately record the sex of people charged or convicted of rape or attempted rape

I support Petition 1876: Accurately record the sex of people charged or convicted of rape or attempted rape.

This petition asks for clarity in recording official statistics. The public must be able to have trust in official statistics and trust in public organisations, and this petition urges for an accurate recording of sex in the case of people charged or convicted of rape or attempted rape.

The Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee is well-placed to establish some clarity for the public by finding out what current policies are, and to offer support for re-establishing accurate and clear practices on the recording of sex in such cases.
