The 2020/21 audit of the Crofting Commission

Letter to the Convener from Rod Mackenzie, former Convener of the Crofting Commission, 10 December 2021

Dear Sirs,

Reference Crofting Commission Section 22 Report 2021

Thank you for the opportunity to present a written submission to the Public Audit Committee.

I feel that as Convener of the Crofting Commission from June 2017 to June 2021 I should have the opportunity to give evidence to provide a full public record in light of the Section 22.

There are many things that I, as the post holder for four years, can provide context to.

These include;

1. Training.
2. The Board of the Crofting Commissions’ relationship with Sponsor Division.
3. The Boards reaction to the Covid pandemic and their involvement in operation matters.
4. The vote of no confidence in the CEO and the letter to the Cabinet Secretary in November 2020.

Having watched the Public Audit Committee meeting with the current Convener and CEO on the 2nd December, I was encouraged with their submissions, however along with two of your members I do question the longevity of these improvements. I do think for the good of Crofting there are further lessons to be learnt and improvements to be made.

Yours faithfully
Rod Mackenzie
