When, in another context, we used the word "mortgage", a well-known and perhaps somewhat eccentric Scottish sheriff, who is a friend of mine, sent us huge amounts of stuff complaining about the use of that word. Did you get that too? Yes. His complaint was that "mortgage" is an English legal term, which is the same reason for complaint in this case.

Although it seemed as though the beta interferon trials would supersede the results of the appraisal, the focus now seems to have returned to the appraisal. We need to get in touch with the Scottish Executive urgently for an update on the trials as they relate to Scotland.

Fergus Ewing can take from that that we have a full awareness of the importance of getting on with the work. Given the large amount of traffic on the A830 from Mallaig harbour, safety is often compromised, not only for travellers but for the communities that are cut off when the road is closed due to accidents.

We expect the service to work towards the attainment of the national standards, but it is important that we allow the service to get on with the job of improving the system and not simply to perform a data collection and measurement process, which takes time and resources.
