Lewis has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament since 1999, and was constituency member for Aberdeen Central until 2011. He has lived in the North East since his family moved from Stornoway to Insch when he was ten years old. Lewis has worked in the areas of research, education and representation in Aberdeen and the North East for most of the last thirty years; his wife, Sandra, works in the oil industry. He has two grown up daughters. His responsibilities as a Minister included health, transport, planning, enterprise, energy, lifelong learning, environment, health, community care and rural development and in opposition he has led for Labour on tourism, infrastructure and capital investment, and justice. He is currently convener of the Scottish Parliament's Health and Sport Committee.
