Celebrating a Decade of Women and Girls in Sport Week

  • Submitted by: Jack Middleton, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 05 November 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-01890

That the Parliament celebrates 10 years of Women and Girls in Sport Week, which is delivered in partnership with Active Scotland; recognises the importance of celebrating, promoting and increasing participation in sport among women and girls across Scotland; notes the work of the Scottish Association of Teachers of Physical Education (SATPE), alongside Active Scotland, to support teachers in creating opportunities for pupils to get involved; welcomes that female participation in sport is at an all-time high, with football among the fastest-growing sports for women; recognises, however, that the gender gap in participation remains, with too many girls dropping out during high school and women facing barriers to participation throughout their lives; acknowledges that a lack of investment, access to facilities and sporting opportunities continues to hold women and girls back; believes that Scotland cannot afford to lose the next generation of sporting talent, and encourages continued action and investment to inspire the next generation of Scotland’s female sporting stars.
