That the Parliament marks with solemn reflection the 149th anniversary of the Blantyre Pit disaster, which took place on 22 October 1877; remembers with the greatest respect and sympathy the 215 men and boys who lost their lives in what was Scotland’s worst mining disaster, which reduced the population of Blantyre by almost 6%; pays tribute to the work of the Blantyre Project, which maintains an extensively researched archive of those who lost their lives, including detailed accounts of the disaster and rescue, and the life stories of many of the victims, and sincerely thanks those who continue to organise annual acts of remembrance, including the Blantyre Telegraph, and share stories of how Blantyre’s residents came together in the wake of such a devastating tragedy, so that their courage, dignity, and solidarity is not forgotten.
