That the Parliament notes with alarm the reported crisis at Royal Mail; understands that around 400 workers are leaving the company every week and that attrition rates have been exacerbated by the introduction of a new delivery system, DM26, which was supposed to improve efficiency but has instead led to major mail backlogs across Scotland and the rest of the UK, delaying the delivery of important letters such as hospital appointments, business orders, court letters and bills; believes that this avoidable crisis has been caused by decades of mismanagement, underinvestment and excessive profiteering at Royal Mail, and supports the call from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) for an emergency summit between the UK Government, employers and union representatives to save Royal Mail, which the CWU has said stands “on the brink of collapse”.
