Addressing the Unique Challenges Facing Scotland's Highlands and Islands

That the Parliament recognises the unique social, economic and geographical challenges faced by communities across the Highlands and Islands; acknowledges the resilience of people who live and work in rural and island communities, despite barriers created by distance, depopulation and limited infrastructure; notes the reported ongoing concerns regarding access to NHS services, GP and dental provision, affordable housing, reliable ferry services, road and digital connectivity, and the rising cost of living in remote areas; recognises what it sees as the importance of supporting the area's industries, including fishing, agriculture, aquaculture, tourism and small businesses, in sustaining community economies; commends the dedication of volunteers, community organisations and emergency services, which play a vital role in supporting residents; believes that people living in the Highlands and Islands should enjoy the same opportunities and access to public services as those elsewhere in Scotland, and calls on the Scottish Government, local authorities and public agencies to work collaboratively with communities to deliver long-term investment, strengthen essential services, improve transport and digital infrastructure, support economic growth to ensure that the Highlands and Islands remain thriving places in which to live, work and raise families.
