Pollinator Friendly Symington

  • Submitted by: Elena Whitham, Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 15 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12507

That the Parliament applauds Pollinator Friendly Symington, which, it understands, is a group of volunteers aiming to bring about a resurgence of pollinator-friendly plants and habitats to the Ayrshire village; notes that the project was started during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, when villagers noticed wildflowers growing in road verges that were not getting cut regularly; understands that villagers took on the management of the road verges and collaborated with the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Nectar Network to increase the wildflower population; congratulates the group on connecting gardeners in the village and encouraging residents to make their own pollinator-friendly spaces; expresses concern that over 95% of the UK’s wildflower meadows have reportedly been lost since the 1940s and that this negatively impacts the habitat and food sources of pollinators, which are essential for growing crops; commends Pollinator Friendly Symington for addressing what it sees as this serious issue in the local community, and wishes everyone involved the very best for the future.
