Girlguiding Scotland - "Own Our Zone" Campaign

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 20 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10521

That the Parliament recognises the launch of Girlguiding Scotland’s campaign, Own Our Zone, which was created by its youth advocate forum Speak Out; understands that the campaign is about making public spaces safer for girls and young women across Scotland, through raising awareness of the importance of gender mainstreaming within urban town planning and tackling the systemic barriers that prevent girls and young women from feeling safe in public spaces; notes that the campaign first launched internally in August 2023 through a challenge pack to Girlguiding Scotland members about safe spaces, and is now launching externally to call for tangible change; further notes that it encourages young women and girls to get outdoors, be active and participate in public life, to benefit their mental and physical health, and considers that, to achieve such goals, there must be a shift in conversation about safe spaces, to focus on tackling societal barriers and the behaviours of perpetrators, rather than placing the onus on the actions of women and girls.
