40th Anniversary of the Bearsden Shark Discovery

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05859

That the Parliament celebrates the 40th anniversary of the excavation project to confirm the discovery of the "Bearsden Shark"; understands that, in 1981, Stan Wood, at the time an amateur fossil hunter, began work after discovering evidence of fossilisation near his home in Bearsden; further understands that excavation work carried out in 1982 uncovered numerous fossils, including the complete fossilised skeleton of a one metre-long prehistoric Stethacanthidae shark; believes that the discovery of the Bearsden Shark helped to shape the geological understanding of pre-historic Scotland and its marine life, and congratulates the Bearsden Shark group in keeping the story of the Bearsden Shark alive through their work in the local community, including the installation of site markers and information posts, as well as organising site visits and publishing educational material and information on their website.
