Delivering on Thrombectomy Services and Improving Stroke Care

  • Submitted by: Bob Doris, Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 July 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05534

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the two successful pilot services offering thrombectomy to eligible stroke patients at Edinburgh and Dundee; welcomes what it considers the successful test of change pilot established at the third national delivery hub site at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow; considers that this game-changing procedure will benefit around 800 stroke patients in Scotland annually once it becomes a fully operational, 24/7 national service, saving many from a lifetime blighted by disabilities; understands that each thrombectomy treatment could save the health and social care system around £47,000 per stroke patient; considers, however, that improvements are required in other areas of stroke treatment and care, as highlighted in the recently published Scottish Stroke Care Audit in which it understands there was a 12.6% drop in the number of patients receiving the appropriate stroke care bundle in Greater Glasgow and Clyde; acknowledges what it sees as the impact of COVID-19 on the hard-pressed Scottish Ambulance Service, NHS and social care staff, and thanks them for their endeavours to maintain stroke services across a particularly challenging period; understands that there are more than 1,900 stroke survivors living in the Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn constituency, and considers the calls from the Stroke Association to have a named person in each NHS board’s senior management team to be responsible for the delivery of the revised Stroke Improvement Plan due later in 2022 to be critical to help drive improvements across the entire stroke pathway and for the successful implementation of what it sees as a much-needed, progressive stroke service for Scotland.
