To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on how it is delivering free sanitary products in schools, colleges and universities.

As announced by the First Minister on 24 August, the Scottish Government is providing £5.2 million in 2018-19 to deliver access to free sanitary products for students at school, college or university.

Responsibility for delivery has been devolved to local authorities and education establishments to suit local needs. The majority of establishments have reported involving students in deciding how products should be made available. As such, a range of delivery models are in place.

Scottish Government officials will continue to work with key stakeholders to share best practice and further develop the policy to ensure delivery meets the needs of students.

To ask the Scottish Government what action it can take to end unpaid work trials.

The Scottish Government opposes the use of unpaid work trials and is concerned about how the Department for Work and Pensions is promoting them through Jobcentre Plus.

If a trial period is offered, then this should be paid whether this leads to permanent employment or not.

Whilst employment law is reserved to Westminster, we are using all levers at our disposal to promote Fair Work and to tackle worker exploitation. Initiatives such as the Scottish Business Pledge, encouraging the payment of at least the real Living Wage, and supporting strong industrial relations, are making a real difference to workers throughout the country.
