Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

Written questions must be answered within 10 working days (20 working days during recess)

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on its commitment to consult with survivors and relevant organisations on the terms of reference, and the attributes of the chair of, the national inquiry into historical child abuse.

The Scottish Government is today (29 January 2015) inviting survivors and relevant organisations to offer their views on the terms of reference and attributes of the chair and panel for the national inquiry into historical child abuse.

Survivors and relevant organisations can write or email their views to the Scottish Government by contacting [email protected]

Scottish Government officials are also working with a range of support organisations across Scotland and Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children in Scotland to organise a series of events and meetings to hear directly from survivors and others. A series of small local events and larger regional events will be organised from now until the end of March 2015 to give survivors and relevant organisations an opportunity to have their views heard.

To ask the Scottish Government how much the average Scottish student in Scotland (a) saved in 2013-14 and (b) has saved in 2014-15 compared with studying in England as a result of the policy of free tuition; how many students were affected, and how much was saved in total.

In academic year 2013-14, the Scottish Government’s policy of free tuition meant that over 120,000 eligible undergraduate students did not have to pay fees.

If studying in England, the same group of students would have had to pay fees of up to £9,000 to cover their tuition.

As not all higher education institutions in England charge £9,000 per annum for tuition, it is not possible to provide an exact total for the notional savings made by all Scottish domiciled students in 2013-14.

However, if 120,000 students had been obliged to pay the average fee of £7,860 charged in England during 2013-14, this would total £940 million.

Final student numbers for eligible Scottish domiciled undergraduates are not yet available for 2014-15.
