To ask the Scottish Executive how many (a) recorded cases of, (b) prosecutions for and (c) convictions for drug crimes there have been in each of the last five years, broken down into (i) illegal importation of drugs, (ii) illegal cultivation of drugs, (iii) possession of drugs with intent to supply, (iv) possession of drugs, (v) money laundering-related drugs offences and (vi) other drugs offences, in each (1) police force and (2) local authority area.

The available information isgiven in the following tables. The court proceedings statistics for 2004-05 arescheduled for publication in March 2006.

The statistics dealing with recordedcrime and court proceedings are not directly comparable as a person may be proceededagainst for more than one crime involving more than one victim and there is thepossibility that the crime recorded by the police may be altered in the course ofjudicial proceedings. Also a crime may be recorded by the police in one year andcourt proceedings concluded in a subsequent year.

1. Trends in the recorded crimefigures between 2003 and 2004 have been affected by the introduction in April 2004of the Scottish Crime Recording Standard. As anticipated, this increased the numbersof minor crimes recorded by the police, such as vandalism, petty assault, breachof the peace and minor thefts.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many (a) recorded cases of, (b) prosecutions for and (c) convictions for (i) dangerous and careless driving, (ii) drunk driving, (iii) speeding, (iv) unlawful use of a vehicle, (v) vehicle defect offences and (vi) other motor vehicle offences there have been in each of the last five years, broken down by (1) police force and (2) local authority area.

The available information isgiven in the following tables. The court proceedings statistics for 2004-05 arescheduled for publication in March 2006.

The statistics dealing with recordedcrime and court proceedings are not directly comparable as a person may be proceededagainst for more than one crime involving more than one victim and there is thepossibility that the crime recorded by the police may be altered in the course ofjudicial proceedings. Also a crime may be recorded by the police in one year andcourt proceedings concluded in a subsequent year.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many (a) recorded cases of, (b) prosecutions for and (c) convictions for (i) housebreaking, (ii) theft by opening a lockfast place, (iii) theft from a motor vehicle, (iv) theft of a motor vehicle, (v) shoplifting, (vi) other theft, (vii) fraud and (viii) other crimes of dishonesty there have been in each of the last five years, broken down by (1) police force and (2) local authority area.

The available information is given in the following tables. The court proceedings statistics for 2004-05 are scheduled for publication in March 2006.

The statistics dealing with recorded crime and court proceedings are not directly comparable as a person may be proceeded against for more than one crime involving more than one victim and there is the possibility that the crime recorded by the police may be altered in the course of judicial proceedings. Also a crime may be recorded by the police in one year and court proceedings concluded in a subsequent year.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many (a) recorded cases of, (b) prosecutions for and (c) convictions for (i) serious assault, (ii) robbery and (iii) other non-sexual crimes of violence there have been in each of the last five years, broken down by (1) police force and (2) local authority area.

The available information is given in the following tables. The court proceedings statistics for 2004-05 are scheduled for publication in March 2006.

The statistics dealing with recorded crime and court proceedings are not directly comparable as a person may be proceeded against for more than one crime involving more than one victim and there is the possibility that the crime recorded by the police may be altered in the course of judicial proceedings. Also a crime may be recorded by the police in one year and court proceedings concluded in a subsequent year.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many people (a) under and (b) over 18 have DNA profiles stored in the police national database without having been charged or cautioned for any offence.

There are 268 DNA profiles held on the Scottish DNA Database that people provided voluntarily, so these were provided without anyone being cautioned or charged. The people who provided these samples can withdraw their permission for the database to hold them in writing at any time. Three of these profiles are from people aged under 18.

Other than those 268 profiles, the Database does not store any DNA profiles from people who have not been charged or cautioned. All other profiles held by the database were taken from suspects following arrest or detention for specific offences, and caution and charging is undertaken as part of the arrest and detention procedures.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many dentists received gross earnings from the NHS of (a) over £500,000, (b) £250,000 to £500,000, (c) £100,000 to £250,000 and (d) £50,000 to £100,000 in each year since 1997.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many alcohol-related admissions there were to each NHS hospital in each year since 1997.

Figures are available in the Scottish Parliament Information Centre. Table 1 (Bib. number 37917) shows the combined figures for alcohol-related discharges from general acute and psychiatric hospitals during 1997-98 to 2001-02. Table 2 (Bib. number 37918) provides data for discharges from general acute hospitals only from 1997-98 to 2004-05. Psychiatric discharges are unavailable for 2002-03 to 2004-05.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many people worked in the (a) public and (b) private sector in each local authority area in each of the last six years, broken down by industry.

The preferred source for public sector employment estimates is the recently published public sector employment statistics series, which is based on the agreed National Accounts definition of the public sector. These estimates are constructed from administrative and survey data from public sector organisations. However, estimates from this source are only available for Scotland.

Data for 2003 and 2004 by local authority area are available from the Annual Scottish Labour Force Survey (LFS). In the LFS workers classify themselves into the appropriate category thus public sector estimates sourced from the LFS include agency workers and self-employed workers. Agency workers, in particular, are typically employed by private sector firms, though they provide a service within the public sector. Thus the LFS over estimates the size of the public sector. The Office for National Statistics estimate that the LFS over estimates public sector employment by about 5%.

This LFS data for 2003 and 2004 are given in the tables of Employment by Sector, Industry and Work Local Authority Area, 2003-2004, a copy of which has been placed in the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (Bib. number 37850).

The Annual Scottish Labour Force Survey was enhanced for the first time in 2003. This enabled a more detailed breakdown of key labour market statistics, both in terms of their characteristics and the coverage provided at local authority level. Thus data are not available before 2003.
