To ask the Scottish Executive what assessment has been made of the redesign of paediatric scoliosis services.

An independent expert review of the Scottish specialist spinal deformity service was undertaken during 2010-11 in order to examine the evidence base for the surgical treatment of scoliosis, the demand for the service, the configuration and performance of the current service and make recommendations about potential changes to the service. The review was developed and recommendations were formed by a wide multidisciplinary and multiprofessional group, including NHS clinical, managerial, planning representation, and members of the voluntary sector. The review report is currently being considered.

The costs of increasing the provision of full tuition fee loans to Scottish-domiciled students studying in England, Wales and Northern Ireland post academic year 2012-13 are dependent on a range of variables. These include:

1. the higher education institution attended by the student;

2. the course undertaken;

3. the applicable fee level;

4. whether the student actually takes up the loan offer, 23% currently do not, and

5. any change in demand from Scottish domiciled students for the rest of the UK study.
