To ask the Scottish Government, further to the answer to question S5O-01180 by Kevin Stewart on 28 June 2017, what has been the level of rough sleeping in each local authority area in each year since 2011.
Information on rough sleeping is collected by local authorities at the point that a homeless application is made. Homeless applicants are asked whether any member of the household has slept rough at any point in the previous 3 months, and also if they have slept rough on the night preceding the application. The Scottish Government collects this information from local authorities as part of the Homeless Applications HL1 Dataset, and headline figures are published on a bi-annual basis in the Scottish Government statistical publication ‘Homelessness in Scotland’.
Whilst the information collected on this basis will reflect the experiences of rough sleeping of those people approaching local authorities for a homeless application, it will not necessarily capture all instances of rough sleeping, for example people who are rough sleeping but who have not made a homeless application.
The following two tables provide figures on a local authority and Scotland basis for the years 2011-12 to 2016-17 on the number of homeless applications where a household member had reported sleeping rough in the three months prior to the application, and the number of applications where a household member had reported sleeping rough on the night preceding the application.
