To ask the Scottish Executive how the appropriate methods of disposal of compact fluorescent light bulbs are brought to the attention of the public.
Distributors of household electricaland electronic equipment, including compact fluorescent light bulbs, mustprovide their customers with information on a number of aspects relating to theresponsible disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE),including:
the environmental impacts ofhazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment ;
the benefits of separatecollection and environmentally sound recovery and the reasons why they shouldnot dispose of WEEE with other forms of waste they produce;
the meaning of the “crossedout wheeled bin” product marking symbol;
how they can contributetowards re-use, recycling and other forms of recovery of WEEE, and
the arrangements throughwhich customers can dispose of WEEE free of charge.
The government expectsdistributors selling household electrical and electronic equipment to play anactive part in promoting the benefits of free take-back of household WEEE. Theymust provide this information to customers on their retail premises, if theyhave one, or by some other means connected to their sales, eg, on their companywebsite.
