Yes, absolutely. It was useful to hear from everyone on that subject.

On a related point, I happen to live where the etape Caledonia is held, in Pitlochry. Lots of statistics have been put out about what it does for the local economy, which you can discuss, but there has been quite an effort to increase cycling in the area, as a byproduct of the etape. I have to say that, for most of us, Highland Perthshire is a bit of a challenging area to start cycling around—you have to be quite keen or younger than me to be doing that.
Do you have any statistics on the etape? It is used quite a lot as an example, and it has now been accepted—it is going to come, it will shut people’s roads and they will not be able to get out of their house for eight hours, at the worst, which is quite an impact on people. People sometimes wonder whether it would be better if it could be an off-road event, which is one aspect, as has been said, but also whether there could be more environmentally friendly events, if I can describe them like that—events that are not so high level. Do you have statistics on how the etape helps people into cycling?

That is useful to think about. Joe Long wants to say something on that.

I am sure that we all agree that we need to focus on the challenge that you outline, as it is with us now.
We thank all four of you very much. It has been a really informative session. I know that there are lots of things that you would like to have told us but did not get a chance to. If there is something that you think that we really should have heard and we have not, then feel free to drop us a note afterwards.
You have given us a lot to think about. Thank you for attending.

It is great to hear about bringing those things together. There is a slight caveat on the point that exercise is good for everyone. There is a group of illnesses for which that is not the case. It is important that, when people are saying that everybody must get out and be active, people need to be aware of the differences between different disabilities and, to come back to Kayleigh’s point, not everybody can do the same thing. You do not want overenthusiastic people saying, “Of course you can do this—it is just fear that is stopping you.”
It is great to hear that you are talking to the DWP. It is hard to see how we get around the issue for people who have an illness that comes and goes. If their response is “yes” when they are asked whether they can walk to the end of the street, but they are able to do that one day out of 20, that would mean that their disability benefit would be stopped. There is a real problem, which Kayleigh Kinross-O’Neill has referred to. There needs to be better understanding across the board in sports, as well as in medicine and social care.

We all hope that that gets started very quickly.
If everybody can keep their questions short and their answers quite short as well, we might get through everything that we want to ask about. Jack Middleton, have you asked all your questions on facilities?

Joe Long, do you have a question on funding and facilities?

I was not putting it at your door. I was asking about facilities and whether it is a recognised issue. If the statistic can be disproved, that is one thing, but it feels as though it is a recognised issue because of the nature of getting changed for swimming. I am thinking about when pools are built. Are they set out in a common way? You do not need to answer that now, but I think that it is worth considering what facilities are doing to ensure that people feel safe in the environment.

Absolutely.
Each of you can have one minute if there is something that you feel you have not said, but if you feel as though you have covered as much as you can, I will bring our session to a close.
I thank all four witnesses for joining the meeting and for their evidence and expertise. You have given us a lot to think about, and I am sure that we will follow up on quite a lot of it. Have a safe journey, wherever you are moving on to.
