That question brings us to our last group of questions, which are on funding and facilities. Adam, I think that you wanted to ask something on this.

Welcome back. We will now hear from a second panel of witnesses. We are joined by John Lunn, from Scottish Swimming; Colin Hutchison, from Scottish Athletics; Nick Rennie, from Scottish Cycling; and, online, by David Byrne, from Hillhead Sports Club. Welcome to you all, and thank you for finding time to join us.
We have a few minutes for introductory statements, if you would all like to tell us briefly what your organisation does—it is mostly in the names—and the key things that the committee should look at. We will ask you about various matters, including the legacy of the Commonwealth games and the summer of sport, as well as about other interactions that are involved, such as health and wellbeing, funding and facilities, but perhaps you could introduce your top few issues.

Nick, would you like to say something?

It is great to have that example, as it allows people to think about how we get more money into badly needed facilities.
We are running out of time, but I want to ask specifically about women’s and girls’ participation in swimming. One issue that has come up is people feeling comfortable in the facilities—the changing rooms, the toilets and so on. I note from your information that a significant majority of incidents of reported sexual assaults, harassment and voyeurism in public swimming pools and leisure centres occur in mixed or village-style facilities, whatever they are. That statistic is out there—[Interruption.] Well, if it is not in that information, it is certainly in one of the papers before us. Do you recognise that as an issue?

That is great to hear. I am sure that we all believe that that is the right approach.
On the difficulties of getting women and, in particular, girls to stay in sport, I think that there are a number of factors. One of them could well be money. It is only very recently that women footballers could hope to be paid the living wage, let alone be paid at a high level. However, I am also thinking about the transition from primary to secondary school. My daughter played rugby at primary school, but she was the only girl and the boys would not pass the ball to her. That was the end of rugby for her. She played football and she actually qualified as a coach. She did not really coach, but she still does sport, so I think she is an example of what you have just mentioned.
We need as many people as possible to take part in sport, whether they are good at it or not, and people should never be told that they are bad at it because they might just walk away.
I want to ask about mixed-sex sport and the issues that have come up there. All sports have grappled with this. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think that, in primary schools, pupils can play with anyone. At what point does that become female only? There is no doubt that a lot of girls will be put off either by having to be in changing rooms that are not clearly defined or by having to play with more physically able boys and therefore, if it is a contact sport, being put at risk. How do you grapple with that in the 21st century?

Thank you to all for those introductory remarks.
We will start with a more overarching theme by reflecting back on the legacy of the Commonwealth games, the summer of sport and what they meant for your organisations.

That links to inequalities, which we have been talking about. Adam Harley has some questions about female participation.

I am sorry to interrupt, Professor McGillivray, but I would like to bring in Mr Dunlop and Mr Macleod on the grass-roots issue that Paul McLennan asked about.
