Thank you. Those are interesting pointers to things that we can come back to later. That leads us neatly on to concentrate more on preventative spend.

I do not know whether any of the other witnesses wishes to comment now. The issues might come up later in the session. If no one wants to come in, we will move on to Heather Anderson.

That is a good point about looking outside the medical sphere, but we need those inside it to look at the issue, too.

Thank you, Heather. We will circle back to drug and alcohol deaths. Paul, I believe that you wanted to ask about that.

Okay. We will take that under advisement. It is interesting.

On the point that you just made about subnational planning, does anyone have any evidence that they can send us about what it has achieved so far? We are all aware of it. There are issues with it. Some things have been pointed to us as a great example of where we might go. Others who work in the field pointed out that there is little evidence on some aspects. If any of the witnesses has any detail on the analysis of what has happened so far, the committee would welcome that.

That sounds like excellent bedtime reading for us, so we will go back to that. Thank you for those suggestions.

We have run through pretty much all of our questions, but I want to come back to something that was said earlier and leave a comment as food for thought—just to be controversial, perhaps. A suggestion was made about putting money towards people having their children in childcare so that they can get better opportunities to work. Where is the evidence that children who come through that system perform better than, say, children who are looked after by their families? Could the Government spend some of the money for prevention on families so that they can look after their children for longer before they go back to work?

There was research in Italy on how obesity in children has increased significantly as mothers have gone back to work and so have not made so much homemade food. That might be a sweeping statement, but the issue is definitely out there and nobody discusses it. Does anyone have anything on that that they can send us, either to refute or support it?

Subordinate Legislation

Meeting date: 7 October 2026

Helen McDade

We will publish a short report to the Parliament setting out our decision. I thank the minister and her officials for attending.

That is the last item on our agenda. The Parliament will be in recess for the next two weeks, and our next meeting will be on Wednesday 28 October.

Meeting closed at 12:05.
