Climate Action

Meeting date: 3 September 2026

Sanne Dijkstra-Downie

Okay. Great. Does either of the other organisations want to give its perspective on that?

I want to turn to the climate change plan. What do you think the key deliverables under the climate change plan will be for your organisations over the next few years? Crucially, where do you think the biggest risks lie, especially in the context of the reforms that we have discussed, given the potential work that those will involve and the inevitable uncertainty that they will create, potentially over a number of years? Perhaps Mr Paris can start.

Thank you. I also want us to focus on some of the risks. Those were all wonderful deliverables, but I am also very keen to hear where there might be potential pinch points.

It is very brief—it is about the statutory nature targets. The Government has indicated that it will not look to introduce statutory nature targets this year. Do the timeframes concern you? I want to briefly hear your reflections on that.

Dr Dixon, you helpfully spoke about your concerns about the delays in setting the statutory nature targets, so I do not want to get into that issue in too much detail, but can you say a bit more about the impact in relation to where we are compared with where you hoped we would be? You mentioned the hope that we will reduce the timescales from three years to set the targets and a further three years to report on them. Do you have any recommendations for the committee, beyond our raising the issue with the cabinet secretary?

Ms Cumming, is Audit Scotland doing any relevant work on the nature targets specifically or the nature crisis in general that you think it would be helpful to highlight to the committee?

I have one more question, if we have time.

My entry in the register of members’ interests says that I am a councillor at City of Edinburgh Council. I also declare that my husband is employed as a principal engineer by Sweco, which is an Edinburgh-based engineering consultancy firm.
