So the NDPB is probably not the final structure.

Councillor Lyall, the £2 bus fare cap was piloted in the Highlands and Islands and I believe that it has been in place in Shetland since the end of January this year. What is your experience of that? Are there any learnings that should be picked up across the rest of the country?

You are absolutely right to highlight the timetabling aspect, which is often a barrier to bus use in rural communities—I certainly recognise that from my constituency. I will not ask everyone on the panel for a response, but I have a final point about interregional and intercity travel in relation to the £2 bus fare cap. I am conscious that the situation is changing quite quickly. Last week, I was on an Ember bus travelling from Edinburgh to Aviemore. The bus stopped in many different villages that may never have had intercity travel and connectivity before. On the one hand, there are quite drastic changes and on the other hand, we have the £2 bus fare cap. We are not clear yet as to how that will work for interregional and intercity travel, but it will have drastic implications for the competitiveness of rail, which we touched on last week with ScotRail. I will open that up to anyone who has thoughts or comments on it.

Thank you, convener, and thank you to the panel members for joining us this morning.

I have some questions for Moraig Lyall on rural and island connectivity. I have the Shetland tunnels report with me, and the work going on there at the moment is quite exciting. What strikes me about the tunnels project, and the aspirations around it, is the links that are being made not just between connectivity and economic possibilities but between connectivity and population retention. Can you touch on that aspect? How important is ZetTrans’s work not just on population retention but on seeing transport and connectivity as an economic driver in the islands?

Thank you for that. I know thatother colleagues will have some questions on road condition, too. Mark Speed, would you like to add anything, particularly on what the big connectivity challenges are in the rural parts of the region that you cover?

We will come on to bus reform.

Mark Speed, do you have any thoughts on interregional and intercity travel? I would have passed through some places in your region on that journey last week.

In his questions, Graham Simpson touched on flights, which the committee has a strong interest in. We have taken evidence on flights before and hope to do so again. Will you talk about the importance of flights to the economy of the Shetland islands and the direction of travel that you would like to see for the work on flights?

Thanks for that. No further questions from me, convener.

Thank you very much for that. I will not ask the rest of the panel about tunnels, but I will touch on the broader piece about rural connectivity and its link with economic development. Ewan Wallace, how important is the work of your members in ensuring economic development in rural parts of the country?

Bruce Kiloh, on that same point about rural connectivity, SPT covers several different local authorities that might have different aspirations and use different strategies and approaches to economic development and business growth and how they relate to the needs of particular businesses and communities. How do you manage that?
