Thank you for that response. I look forward to hearing that statement next week and hope that there will be some information that answers my question.

On the timescales, when were you first made aware of the situation? I appreciate the sensitivities relating to you getting involved, but the evidence that we received suggested that the communication did not take place at a very early stage.

Thanks. You will, no doubt, have been made aware through representations in correspondence from the island communities of the frustrations around the islands business resilience fund. During the election campaign, the First Minister made a commitment to a £10 million fund to be delivered within 20 days of the Government forming. That changed to a 100-day commitment and a £3 million fund in the current financial year, with the remainder of the £7 million to be available over the rest of the current session of Parliament. That is very different from what the First Minister said when he was in the Western Isles during the election campaign. Do you understand why island businesses are angry and frustrated about the change in position?

Cabinet secretary, you will be aware that, prior to the summer recess, the committee took evidence on the situation with the Inverness flights to Stornoway and the northern isles.

I thank the cabinet secretary and his officials for joining us. I share the concerns that have been raised about lines of communication between CalMac and the Government. I think that the committee would appreciate further information on that—we look forward to receiving that in writing afterwards.

I will pick up on some points on the Sound of Harris service. Cabinet secretary, you were in the chamber yesterday when I went into a bit of detail on the situation regarding the MV Loch Portain. Do you have any reflections on what has happened over the summer? The situation began in the spring, when the vessel was out of action being re-engined. It then came back into service, only to be pulled off again. It now looks as though some pretty significant further works need to be carried out on the vessel, and it will not be returning soon, certainly not until after the summer timetable has concluded in October. Can you give us any information on that, please?

Thank you for that response. You have talked about the wider issues—we have seen a lot of disruption across the network, and you recognise that you do not want islanders having to deal with those situations.

However, I asked a specific question about the Sound of Harris route and the situation with the MV Loch Portain. That vessel is a key part of our infrastructure—it links the Western Isles north to south. It is important for visitors and for businesses that operate across the islands. It was taken out of service in the spring for months to be re-engined, it then came back into service, but it is now out again for a prolonged period. Something major has clearly happened. Have you been in discussion with CalMac about that particular issue, and do you have any updates that you can share with us?

Linked to that, is there any update on the upgrades to the pier at Gairsay and Lochboisdale harbour? Are you maintaining your commitment to those improvements?

I will come on to the letter that you sent and the plans for stakeholder engagement.

The situation with the Inverness flights is time sensitive. As I understand it, the £1 million takes us to March 2027, which is next year. Do you have a response on that just now?

That is not far away. Time is pressing on. Would you consider what has happened with the Inverness flights, and the situation in March that we are approaching, to represent market failure?

I look forward to it.

That is everything from me just now, convener.
