In my mind, I automatically thought that the period was August to August. Let me clarify that—

We will ensure that the vessels that we have said will be given as a direct award to Ferguson’s will be delivered within the subsidy control principles that the UK Government has set out. I want that to happen—I have been clear about that. In future, I will ensure that I use the terms “watershed moment” and “competitive, thriving business”, if that will satisfy you.

That money is required for modernising the yard in order to deliver the vessels. It is important that those things happen in tandem, which is exactly what we are seeking to do.

I am sorry, Mr Simpson, but I do not accept that premise, because individuals in this Parliament, including many of your former colleagues, would go to any end to criticise the yard and the Government’s investment in it. That is not part of my motivation. The Government’s motivation in this regard is to ensure that we can get on and deliver the commitments that we made to the public. It is worth re-emphasising that we had an election just a few months ago and that this was a key part of our manifesto. It featured in the prospectus that we put to the Scottish people, who returned us to office on the premise of our bringing Transport Scotland back in-house. Forgive me for being a little old-fashioned, but I think that it is probably time that we got on and met the expectations of the promises that we made to the public.

I have told the committee what I can in relation to that situation at the moment. I will seek to ensure that you have the full details that you very much deserve subsequent to the meeting’s conclusion.
